SAS Creative July 2010 - August 2016

Senior Web Developer

Responsibilities

  • Front-end and back-end development of Web Apps/Sites, HTML E-mails and Banner Ads.
  • Delegating, overseeing, and working with junior and freelance developers.
  • Liaising with clients, in person and on phone, to discuss technical matters during briefing meetings and ongoing support.

The majority of work was for Disney, Marvel & Star Wars, alongside projects for other small, medium and large businesses.

Significant Technical Projects

Pete's Dragon Is Near

Walt Disney Studios Australia requested a fun personalised experience involving Elliot (Pete's Dragon) appearing in people's neighbourhoods, utilising Google Maps and Streetview, across all major devices (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile). From the initial briefing meeting, the client was uncertain on technical possibilities, and just putting the idea out there. Research and experimentation was needed to see how far the idea could technically be pushed.

Beyond the development of the Web App, responsibilities also included liaising with the client for briefing and progress meetings and generating the planned project time-line.

The project was delivered on time, and the client was thrilled with the final result.

Disney.com.au Website

With limited documentation and direction, the main Disney.com.au site, built by another company using Drupal, had blown out of control. With a new system on the horizon, built by the Disney International Tech team, Disney Australia had no choice but to switch off the lights. However, a large company can not simply pull the plug and put up a holding page. Disney Australia turned to SAS Creative for help.

Ben was required to undertake a major review of the build to understand and clean up the contributed and custom modules, content types and fields setup. Along with the addition of a new major section, the enhanced build was successfully deployed and maintained for another year before the DNS switch was ready to be flicked.

Disney Competitions System

SAS Creative was often requested by Disney Australia and New Zealand to run online competitions. Ben developed a workflow and code base allowing for extremely efficient builds, with custom designs and functionality, to be deployed smoothly through their relatively old staging server system. Codeigniter was selected for its small footprint and high portability. The system has been a great solution and used to run many custom competitions for the past 3+ years.

Australian Defence Apparel (ADA) B2B E-Commerce Sites

Ben developed two gated B2B E-commerce Magento sites for ADA, allowing customers to order and purchase safety apparel for their departments and staff. Magento was chosen as it provided advanced features not readily available by other systems at the time, such as multiple stores, varying user access levels to different product lines, and the ability to handle multiple addresses.

Ben designed and developed a clean Wordpress build, with the Shopp e-commerce plugin. It successfully handled the client's needs for over 7 years.
